It is the point at which air becomes breath, breath becomes speech, and food and drink are transformed into matter that will nourish and restore the body, eventually becoming part of the body itself, potentially transforming it forever. She simultaneously concretises and disturbs multiple social and bodily boundaries, among which the borders between poverty and riches, purity and corruption, power and weakness, humanity and monstrosity, and collective and individual identity. The brothel, the site at which her career begins in earnest, effects and underpins these transgressions and transformations.
What, then, should happen when these liminal figures and liminal spaces collide in eighteenth-century French writing?
Particularly when eating, drinking, and sharing meals underpinned much of the sex trade, and when advances in culinary know-how, nutritional science and materialist philosophy were all navigating the implications of ingestion and digestion on the body and the self? L Art de Jouir (Ldp Bib.Essais) (English and French Edition)
Eighteenth-century libertine and pornographic literature was inextricably bound to education and the feverish pursuit of knowledge. Marginal and erotic texts frequently depicted the discovery of enlightenment and reason through the material body, by means of sensory and specifically sexual experience. One crucial yet often overlooked aspect of this erotic education takes the form of ingestion. While ingestion has often been read as just another stage of libertine seduction, during the eighteenth century food and drink were increasingly thought capable of moulding both body and mind, thanks to advances in medical, chemical and culinary science.
