This book reads like the description says. It is a collection of recollections places in chronological order. I could image what the hardships may have been but I do not think the author conveyed the drama and struggle this journey must have been. It is hard to imagine the sheer distances and deprivations that must have been encountered. What were the emotional trials and the reactions to what must have been heart-rending events?
None of this has been explored. I have no idea if the subject was unable to recall or his mental and emotional states prevented him from conveying these thoughts after so many trials.
If so, this may even have leant an air of how challenging this journey must have been. Amazingly the last miles were covered in about 40 pages. Jun 02, Richard F. So extraordinary a story could have deserved a writer like Jules Verne A story of unimaginable tenacity, courage and wits which deserves to be known by all who honor those them applied worthy characteristics. Climbing Everest is nothing. Three years of guts, refusal to quit and concentration on his goal are extraordinary indeed.

Aug 08, Mr Cardy rated it did not like it. I signed up for an account just to write a review of warning for anyone considering this book. I had to give up after pages or so. The story and dialogue was confusing and completely irrelevant to what I thought would be the plot. The synopsis is completely misleading. I am renewed with awe at the resilience of the human spirit with each new title I read that deals with survival under impossible circumstances.
This book will not disappoint even the most avid reader. I highly recommend it! Boring Many long pointless statements. This could be good but it seems to drag on and on about non-relevant topics and mundane subjects. I did not find this to be an enjoyable book. It was an effort to sit down with it. Apr 27, Barry Turner rated it liked it Shelves: biography. Great Jack London-style adventure yarn about a German imprisoned in Siberia who escapes and takes three years to get back home.
A lot of the facts have since been disputed but there is no doubt this book has the flavour of authenticity. Dec 23, Mike Steinharter rated it did not like it. The writing was just so poor that I had to keep reminding myself where I was.

I had a hard time putting it down and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inspiring and enduring narrative. Such a good book. It kept my interest all the way through. It would have had 5 stars if the ending had been a little more detailed but maybe another book will go into how he did after he was free and home.
Aug 09, Rose rated it really liked it. This was quite the incredible story. It was interesting to note how he was helped by a Jew, who knew full well that he was an escaped German soldier. Amazing story But not very engaging- I slogged thru the last half just to finish. I would have liked more of the story after he made it across the border.
Amazing story, the writing is below average but the fantastic story makes it compelling. Toss up between the long walk and as far ad my feet will carry me. Sensational story about one man's will to survive. Human endurance and drive can never be over rated. Apr 19, Sherrie rated it liked it. A memoir of a German man who managed to escape a Siberian war prison and cross the continent to get home.
The story shows the impressive resilience of the human spirit. It did end rather abruptly with his return to Germany. I would have liked to know more about his assimilation back into society. An exception story about one man's escape from one of Stalin's Gulag and his trek to freedom. Dec 30, bruce davidson rated it it was ok. VERY hard life in the gulags. Feb 07, Eldon. A description of a real event?
I doubt it.

The story has more holes that a piece of Swiss cheese. An entertaining tale, nonetheless. Four stars. Great reminder to the rest of the world that the germans are people too. Almost unbelievable story! This is a fantastic tale of endurance and an insight into how a human will degenerate when on the edge of survival for a long time. While the writing style is a little dated, the elements of the story will keep you going thru blizzards, wolf attacks, starvation, you name it, he survived it. The people he meets are well described, from the doctor that helps him, to the reindeer herding peasants.
Most of the people he meets help him, which provides the better view of humanity.
